LOGAN, Utah – The San Diego State women’s basketball team (14-6, 3-4) won at Utah State (1-16, 0-6) 85-66 Saturday afternoon. The Aztecs shot 12-for-20 (60%) from three and scored 85 points, their fourth most in a road game in the Mountain West era (26 years).

“I’m really proud of how we refocused and regrouped [after losing the last two] and we played well today,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “Utah State is a scary team because they’re hungry to win and shoot a lot of threes. It was just a good all-around win.”

Freshman Nat Martinez had the best game of her young career. She made her first five three-pointers and tied a career-high with 22 points. She also set career highs with nine rebounds and seven assists.

“Nat is a competitor,” Terry-Hutson praised. “She’s going to play hard every time she’s on the floor and she wants to win at all costs. She’s a little bulldog out there. I’m glad she’s on our team and not playing against her.”

Veronica Sheffey had season-highs in points (19) and assists (7). Kim Villalobos had 13 points and eight rebounds and Naomi Panganiban added 12 points.

After Utah State scored the first bucket, the Aztecs went on an 8-0 run in a span of 53 seconds. The Aggies would respond with an 11 -0 run while SDSU went scoreless for over five minutes.

Early in the second quarter, the Aztecs went on a 13-2 run that included eight straight points from Panganiban. SDSU would hold on to the lead for the rest of the game, although the Aggies kept their deficit to single-digits until the fourth quarter.

The Aggies shot 39 threes but made just 9 (23%).

The Aztecs had assists on 21 of their 29 field goals.

STAT OF THE GAME
The Aztecs were 12-for-20 from three. It’s the first time SDSU made at least 12 three-pointers while shooting 60% or better from three in a Mountain West game.

THE NOTE
Nat Martinez, who made just her second start of the year, became the first Aztec in the Mountain West era to make at least six three-pointers, grab at least nine rebounds and dish out at least seven assists.
