Aztecs Can't Overcome Slow Start vs. Colorado State

The SDSU women’s basketball team (13-6, 2-4) lost to Colorado State (13-5, 3-2) 62-58 Wednesday evening. The Aztecs scored just 16 points in the first half and trailed by as much as 16 before pulling within one point late in the fourth quarter.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The San Diego State women’s basketball team (13-6, 2-4) lost to Colorado State (13-5, 3-2) 62-58 inside Viejas Arena Wednesday evening. The Aztecs scored just 16 points in the first half and trailed by as much as 16 before pulling within one point late in the fourth quarter.

“I was proud of how we played in the second half,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “We outscored them by 10 in the second half and looked much more connected, but we didn’t take good shots in the first half and the score reflected that.”

Veronica Sheffey led the Aztecs with 15 points, Adryana Quezada had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Naomi Panganiban chipped in 13 points. Kim Villalobos had a team-high 13 rebounds.

Both teams struggled to score in the first half, combining to make just one of their first 17 three-pointers. The Aztecs were down just one at the end of the first quarter but were 2-for-18 from the field in the second quarter and were outscored 17-4.

SDSU’s offense started to click in the second half, and they erupted for 42 points on 52% percent shooting as they started to chip away at the Rams’ lead.

The Aztecs went on a 9-0 run to pull within a point only to see Colorado State respond with seven unanswered points.

SDSU got back within two points with 51 seconds left, but the Rams made their free throws down the stretch to hold off the Aztecs’ comeback.

The Rams were led by Khloe Froebe who had 18 points and 18 rebounds.

SDSU scored 16 points in the first half and 42 in the second.

THE NOTE
The Aztecs won their first 10 games when they had three or more players score in double-digits but have now lost their last two.
