SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis opened its spring season at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday, defeating UC San Diego 4-1, 4-2 in a doubleheader.

San Diego State remains undefeated in dual matches against UC San Diego, advancing to 15-0, dating back to 1989. The Aztecs are 12-0 under Head Coach Gene Carswell.

The Aztecs downed the Tritons 4-1 in the first match of the day, taking the doubles point and winning three of four completed singles matches to earn the victory.

“We came out of the gates really strong,” said Coach Carswell. “Winning five out of the six first sets in singles was impressive and it really set the tone. We’re such a different group than last year, so it was impressive to see the fight in them. A lot of credit to both our experienced guys and the young guys.”

In doubles competition, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Paul Janson cruised to a 6-1 win over UC San Diego’s David Adamson and Robert Freedman on court three. Alexander Mandma and Mathieu Josserand then captured the doubles point on court one with a 6-4 victory over Zach Pellouchoud and Pelayo Rodriguez.

Mandma, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Liam Spiers led the team in singles competition, securing the match for the Aztecs. Playing on court two, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice took down Diogo Tinoco 6-4, 6-2. Facing off against David Adamson on the fifth court, Mandma also won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. On the top court, sophomore transfer Philipp Bosse was bested 6-4, 1-6, 3-6 by fellow sophomore Carson Lee. On court six, after taking the first set 6-3 and dropping the second 2-6, Liam Spiers put up a commanding performance in the third set, winning 6-0 to clinch a victory for the Aztecs. It was Spiers’ first clinch of his career.

Two matches went unfinished. On the second court Pelayo Rodriguez led Denis Maijorov 6-2, 3-6, 2-0 when the match was called. On court four, Mathieu Josserand led Zach Pellouchoud 6-4, 3-6, 1-0.

After a two-hour break, the two teams returned to the courts for the second leg of the doubleheader, and the Tritons earned the doubles point:
Zach Pellouchoud/Pelayo Rodriguez def. Mathieu Josserand/Alexander Mandma 7-5
Diogo Tinoco/Carson Lee def. Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice/Paul Janson 6-2

“Going into that second match, UC San Diego did not back down. They came after us in doubles and they did a fantastic job of stealing some momentum that we had from the morning match, but our guys responded really well.”

At the No. 1 spot, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice won in straight sets, defeating Carson Lee 6-3, 6-1. On court six, Spiers earned his second singles victory of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Charles Qian.
