Aztecs Finish 12th at the Tindall

SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team slipped two places on the final day of The Tindall, taking 12th on the par-71, 7,106-yard Aldarra Golf Club Tuesday in Sammamish, Washington.

The Aztecs shot an 8-over-par 292 on Tuesday and finished at 13-over 865 over the three rounds, four strokes behind Oregon (+9) and six behind host Washington (+7). Utah captured the team title at -33, followed by Pepperdine (-19), South Carolina (-17), California (-13) and UCLA (-11).

Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) led the way for SDSU, tying for 14th out of 80 golfers at 4-under 209 following a 3-under 69 in today’s final round. Starting on the 10th hole, Kowack quickly got to 4-under for the day with four birdies through his first five holes, but then double-bogeyed the par-3, 234-yard 15th hole. Another bogey on the par-4, 438-yard 18th brought him back to -1, but he finished his back nine (holes 1-9) with one birdie and eight pars for the 69.

Competing as an individual, Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS), tied for 34th at +2 with a 1-over 72 in Tuesday’s final round. Lague’s roller coaster of a day featured six birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys.

Seniors Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) each tied for 49th at 5-over 218. Hastings shot a 4-over 75 on Tuesday, beginning with 11 consecutive pars to start his round. Hastings then bogeyed the par-5, 563-yard third, birdied the par-4, 406-yard fourth, triple-bogeyed the par-4, 445-yard fifth and bogeyed the par-3, 195-yard sixth before finishing with three more pars. Takis, meanwhile, shot a 77 with his lone birdie coming on the par-4, 455-yard 14th hole.

Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 55th at 7-over 220 thanks to an even-par 71 today. Chokprajakchat came up with two birdies and two bogeys in his final round.

Sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) tied for 77th at +22 after a 77 today. Sampson’s lone birdie came on the par-3, 195-yard sixth hole, but he also had three bogeys and two double bogeys.

UCLA’s Pablo Ereno and Utah’s Davis Johnson shared medalist honors at -11, while Utah’s Sergio Jimenez (-10), South Carolina’s Frankie Harris (-9) and Utah’s Brandon Robison (-8) rounded out the top 5.

After a busy week to start the season, the Aztecs will next compete at the prestigious Jackson T. Stephens Cup, Oct. 21-23, in Oklahoma City.
