Aztecs Blank Gonzaga 4-0 on Monday

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team returned to action at the Aztec Tennis Center on Monday. Winners of five of their past six matches, the Aztecs faced the Gonzaga Bulldogs. SDSU won the doubles point and the first three singles matches to win 4-0.
 
The Scarlet and Black improve to 8-2 while the Zags fall to an even 4-4.
 
"A solid performance from our group today against a good Gonzaga team," said Head Coach Gene Carswell following the victory. "It's great to see the work we've been putting in on the tennis court, along with our strength and conditioning workouts, translate into gains in competition. As we can continue to get healthy and back to full strength, I'm excited for our squad with the opportunities that lie in front of them."
 
In doubles, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice played with Bora Sengul (5-1) on the third court and battled Gus Krauel and Tom Dunlop. The Aztecs coasted to a 6-2 victory. Chikaya Sato and Johannes Seeman (6-4) faced off against Leon Roider and Pablo Gomez Galvan on court No. 2. The Aztecs earned a 6-4 victory to win the doubles point. Robin Parts returned to his usual spot atop the doubles lineup with Alexander Mandma (6-0). The duo trailed 5-4 to Sasha Trkulja and Matthew Hollingworth when the Aztecs clinched the doubles point.
 
In singles, Mandma (5-2) played Dunlop on the sixth court. He trounced his opponent 6-1, 6-2.
 
Facing Hollingworth on the second court, Sengul (3-3) held on in the first set 7-5 before winning the second 6-4.
 
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (6-2) went up against Gomez Galvan on court No. 4. He also won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, to clinch an Aztec win.
 
Three matches went unfinished. Chikaya Sato (4-4) faced Leon Roider on the third court. The two split their sets with Sato winning 6-3 in the first set and Roider taking the second 6-4. On the top court, Seeman (3-4) trailed Trkulja 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 0-1. Parts (6-0) was behind against Oscar Rashed on court No. 5, 0-6, 7-6 (7-2), 0-1.
 
San Diego State is hosting the San Diego Spring Invitational at the Aztec Tennis Center from Friday, March 15, through Sunday, March 17. The Aztecs will play at 2 p.m. each day.
