SAN DIEGO – The 8-1 Aztec women’s basketball team returns home to host Bethesda Friday at 11 a.m. for their annual Field Trip game.
Aztec Tidbits
- Children from 60 different local elementary schools will be at the game and the program’s single-game attendance record of 5,320 is expected to be broken.
- SDSU went 2-1 at the Cancun Challenge. They won their first two games over Wisconsin (73-67) and VCU (55-46) before losing by one-point in the final seconds to Providence (55-54).
- The Aztecs began the season 8-0, their best start since the 1988-89 season when SDSU started 14-0.
- SDSU’s win over Wisconsin was their first against a school from a power conference since Dec. 3, 2017 (78-67 at Arizona).
- Veronica Sheffey and Nat Martinez were named to the Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team. Martinez also won her second straight Mountain West Freshman of the Week award.
- The Aztecs were ranked No. 62 in the initial NET rankings released earlier this week. They are the second among Mountain West schools (UNLV) and 13th among mid major programs.
- SDSU leads the Mountain West in free throws made per game (15.4), three-point percentage (35.1%) and average scoring margin (+13.8).
- The Aztecs are top three in the conference in all scoring categories: three-point percentage (35.1%, 1st), field goal percentage (43.4%, 2nd), points per game (71.3, 3rd) and free throw percentage (75.1%, 3rd).
- The last time SDSU averaged 70 or more points per game was the 1991-92 season.
- SDSU is averaging just 13.7 turnovers per game, 38th in the nation. They’ve had less turnovers than their opponent in every game but one and are averaging 5.4 less turnovers than their opposition per game.
- Defensively, the Aztecs are holding opponents to 57.6 points per game on 37.3% shooting, both are top three in the conference.
- The Aztecs have shown off their depth with 10 Aztecs averaging at least 10 minutes per game and 10 of them have had a game with double-digit points.
- 44.5% of the SDSU’s scoring has come from their bench (31.7 of 71.3 points).
- Seven Aztecs average between seven and 12 points per game.
- SDSU has won their first three road games for the first time since 2009-10.
- The Aztecs’ 249 points on the road are their most through three games since having 256 to begin the 1988-89 season.
- SDSU’s 88-46 win at Cal State Bakersfield was their first road win by 40 or more points since Jan. 2, 1997 (82-37 at San Jose State).
- Since the beginning of the 2022-23 season, the Aztecs are 28-4 (.875) when they score 70 or more points and 45-9 (.833) when they score 60 or more.
- Since the beginning of the 2022-23 season, SDSU is 30-7 (.811) in home games.
- Adryana Quezada was on the preseason All-Mountain West team. She averaged a team-high 14.0 points per game last year and became the first Aztec in the Mountain West era (25 years) to shoot at least 50% from the field and 80% from the line.
- Both Quezada and Kim Villalobos have over 1,000 career points and 600 career rebounds. Quezada has scored 1,399 points and collected 688 rebounds (14.0 and 6.9 per game). Villalobos has 1,075 points and 691 rebounds.
- Combined with Cali Clark, SDSU has three players with over 600 career rebounds.
- The Aztecs have six players in their 4th year or later, five of them in the 5th year or later (Clark, Fiso, Green, Quezada and Villalobos).
- SDSU was one of 21 schools (6%) that didn’t lose any players to the transfer portal in the offseason.
- The Aztecs set a program record for attendance last year.
- SDSU has won 20 or more games in each of the last two seasons.
- This is Stacie Terry-Hutson’s 12th season as San Diego State’s head coach.
Player Notes
- Adryana Quezada is one of eight players in the nation to have over 1,300 points and 600 rebounds while shooting at least 50% from the field and 70% from the line.
- Quezada, who has played in exactly 100 games, is one point away from surpassing 1,400 for her career.
- Kim Villalobos has had four assists in each of her last two games. She also had five steals at Cal State Bakersfield Friday.
- Villalobos is one of eight players in the nation with at least 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 175 assists, 150 steals and 75 blocks in her career.
- Villalobos is in the top ten in SDSU history in games, rebounds and blocks.
- On Friday, Villalobos will play in her 129th game, the second most in program history. If she stays healthy, she will surpass Sophia Ramos for the most games played in school history (141).
- Last year Villalobos was the only player in the Mountain West to finish in the top 10 in rebounds, steals and blocks.
- Last year Villalobos became only the second Aztec in the MW era to have at least 300 points, 200 rebounds, 75 assists and 50 steals in a season.
- Against Wisconsin, Veronica Sheffey became just the sixth Aztec in the Mountain West era (1999-present) to have at least 15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in a game.
- Cali Clark is third in the nation among active players in rebounds per minute (minimum 75 games). She was second in the nation last year, trailing only All-American Cameron Brink.
- Clark had six games with 10 or more rebounds in 109 games at Colorado State and has done it six times in six nine with the Aztecs.
- At Cal State Bakersfield, Clark became the first Aztec with 16 or more rebounds since March 2, 2019 (Mallory Adams vs. New Mexico. She was also the first Aztec with nine or more offensive rebounds since Nov. 24, 2017 (Baylee Vanderdoes vs. Central Michigan).
- Clark tied a career-high with three steals vs. Providence. It was her second game this year with three steals (UC Davis.)
- Nat Martinez was named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week to become the second Aztec to ever win that award in back-to-back weeks (Asia Avinger).
- Against Wisconsin, Martinez scored 22 points and became the first Aztec true freshman to score 20 or more points since March 11, 2019 (Sophia Ramos vs. New Mexico).
- Erin Houpt is the only player in the nation to shoot at least 40% from three and 90% from the line in her career.
- Houpt is 92.5% (147-159) from the line in her career, the second best in the nation (minimum 100 made free throws).
- Houpt’s 41.9% career three-point percentage is ninth in the nation among qualified players. She is 10-for-19 (53%) from three this season.
- Jazlen Green is 8-for-11 (72.7%) from three and at one point made six in a row. She was 0-for-19 from three last season.
- Naomi Panganiban became the first true freshman to start the season opener for SDSU since 2018 (Sophia Ramos and Mallory Adams).

- Makaia Smith averages 12.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
