SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State football head coach Sean Lewis announced that 18 student-athletes have signed athletic aid agreements on the first day of early signing period on Wednesday. It is the second recruiting class for Lewis, who became SDSU’s 19th head coach on Nov. 29, 2023.
San Diego State’s early signing class features 10 on offense and eight on defense. The 18-player class has 13 from the state of California, and one apiece from Arizona, Colorado, Michigan, Nevada and Texas. All 18 athletes are joining the Aztecs out of high school.
Additional signees could be added in the coming days.
Of the 10 signees on offense, five are on the offensive line in Delon Craft Jr. (Richmond, Calif./Salesian College Prep), Chase Duarte (Concord, Calif./Clayton Valley Charter High), Ikbahl Kassim (Corona, Calif./Centennial High), Jett Thomas (San Diego/La Jolla High) and Ashdon Wnetrzak (Los Angeles/Sierra Canyon High). There are also two wide receivers - Jaylon Hawkins (Argyle, Texas/Liberty Christian High) and Marcus Mozer (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge High) - one running back - Jordin Thomas (Tracy, Calif./Lincoln High) - one quarterback - JP Mialovski (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan High) - and one tight end - Jacob Alvarez (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley High).
On the defensive side of the ball, three are on the defensive line, including Sidney Dupuy (San Diego/Cathedral Catholic High), and EDGEs Brian Townsend Jr. (Las Vegas/Arbor View High) and Jerry Washington (Glendale, Ariz./Desert Edge High). Also in the class are a pair of linebackers in Etene Pritchard (Pittsburg, Calif./Pittsburg High) and Jeremiah Tuiileila (Sacramento, Calif./Grant Union High), two safeties - Chase Shumate (Detroit, Mich./Mountain Pointe High (Ariz.)) and Kaimana Tufaga (Whittier, Calif./La Serna High) - and one cornerback - Braylon Cardwell (Spring Valley, Calif./Mount Miguel High).
In October 2024, the NCAA elected to eliminate the National Letter of Intent (NLI), which had been a part of the college recruiting process since 1964. The NLI was replaced with financial aid agreements between the NCAA and student-athletes. The NCAA approved the early signing period in 2017, which runs this year from Dec. 4-6. The mid-year 2-4 (junior college) transfer signing period also commenced today and lasts through Jan. 15, 2025, while the regular signing period is slated for Feb. 5-April 1, 2025.
