SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s basketball team (12-2, 1-0) beat Boise State (10-4, 0-1) 74-59 in their Mountain West opener Sunday afternoon.

The Aztecs, who shot 53% from the field, scored 48 of their points in the paint and at one point had 22 straight points come from inside the key.

“Boise State is a fantastic team. We knew we were going to have to dig deep and be disciplined defensively today and I was proud of what we showed today,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “We got some big stops that allowed us to take control of the game.”

Adryana Quezada scored 26 points against Boise State in last year’s Mountain West semifinals and tortured the Broncos again Sunday, scoring 19 points on 9-for-12 shooting.

Kim Villalobos had her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Cali Clark did a little bit of everything with eight points, eight rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Veronica Sheffey also finished in double-digits with 10 points.

The Aztecs hit the ground running making six of their first seven shots as they opened up a 17-6 lead. They would lead the rest of the game with the Broncos pulling within single-digits just once in the second half.

All 18 of SDSU’s third quarter points came from the paint with 14 of them coming from the post trio of Quezada, Clark and Villalobos.

The Aztecs were able to hold the Broncos without a field goal for a six-minute stretch in the fourth quarter.

The Aztecs held Boise State to 36% shooting and just four three-pointers.
