FULLERTON, Calif. – The San Diego State women’s basketball team (10-1) outlasted Cal State Fullerton 61-58 on the road Wednesday night.

“It’s great to be able to learn while winning,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “We were prepared but we didn’t execute tonight and were too sloppy. All road wins matter though.”

The Aztecs were led by the duo of Adryana Quezada and Naomi Panganiban who combined to score 34 points. Panganiban, who scored a career-high 27 points in SDSU’s last game, had 17 and a team-high five assists. Quezada also had 17 while Erin Houpt chipped in 12.

After a slow start, the Aztec bench provided a spark late in the first quarter to help SDSU go on an 8-0 run. Six of the eight points came from their freshman guards Naomi Panganiban and Nat Martinez off steals from another freshman, Kaelyn Hamilton.

Twice in the first half the Aztecs were able to push their lead to eight points, only to see the Titans go on a run themselves to cut the deficit to two points.

SDSU shot just 37 percent in the first half, but still held a three-point lead at the half.

The Titans took the lead late in the third quarter, but Panganiban hit a buzzer-beating half court three to give SDSU a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

Both teams struggled offensively in the fourth quarter. SDSU never trailed in the final quarter but also never led by more than five points. The Titans pulled within one point with 43 seconds remaining, but SDSU pushed their lead to three after a pair of Houpt free throws. Down the stretch, SDSU missed four straight free throws but got enough stops on the defensive end to pull out the win.
