SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis alum Andreea Velcea is returning to The Mesa to serve as the program’s assistant coach, Head Coach Peter Mattera announced on Thursday.
“We are very excited to add a person of Andreea’s caliber to our coaching staff,” said Coach Mattera. “She brings passion and energy, and she knows what it takes to be successful at a high-level NCAA Division 1 tennis program. I have absolutely no doubt that Andreea is going to make us a better team and be a wonderful representative of the university.”
Velcea graduated from SDSU in May after two years as an Aztec, during which she recorded 26 singles and 19 doubles victories. In 2024, the Timisoara, Romania native earned All-Mountain West Doubles honors and tallied 18 singles wins, helping lead her team to a Mountain West Championship. Prior to transferring to SDSU, Velcea amassed over 30 wins at Florida International University.
"Being offered a scholarship to play tennis at SDSU was a dream come true, and the opportunity to continue my journey as an assistant coach is truly an honor," said Velcea. "My time as a student-athlete shaped me both on and off the court, and I am excited to give back to the program that helped me grow. As a coach, I aim to inspire, challenge and support the next generation of athletes, helping them achieve both their athletic and personal goals. It's an incredible privilege to be part of a team that values hard work, discipline and continuous growth."
Velcea will join Mattera and Associate Head Coach Nicolas Vinel for the spring season, which kicks off on January 18 against Point Loma.
