Aztecs Win Nine at Day One of SDSU Fall Classic

San Diego State women’s tennis completed the first day of the SDSU Fall Classic on Friday, going 9-1 at the Aztec Tennis Center without dropping a set in the first round of singles play.

SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women’s tennis completed the first day of the SDSU Fall Classic on Friday, going 9-1 at the Aztec Tennis Center without dropping a set in the first round of singles play.

Jo-Yee Chan, Ninon Martinache, Gloria Alogo, Zoe Olmos, Liisa Varul, Vesa Gjinaj and Charlotte Roesch all won in straight sets to advance in their respective brackets.

Chan picked up a quarterfinal win over Isabella Foshee of Eastern Washington in the Gold Draw, taking the match 6-3, 7-5.

In the Red Draw, Martinache cruised through the first round, taking down UC San Diego’s Adriana Tabares 6-0, 6-2. Alogo followed suit with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Petra Janigova of Nevada.

Olmos and Varul are both advancing in the Black Draw after defeating UC San Diego’s Naomi Nguyen 6-2, 6-3 and Eastern Washington’s Leandra Nizetic 6-1, 6-2, respectively.

Gjinaj and Roesch completed the Aztec singles sweep in the White Draw with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mariya Dobreva of Colorado State and a 6-3, 6-2 victory against UC San Diego’s Allison Lian.

The Aztecs also went 2-1 in doubles, advancing two pairs to the Gold Draw semifinals. Alogo and Varul will compete again on Saturday after claiming a commanding 6-1 win over Nguyen/Jorniak of UC San Diego. A few courts over, Martinache and Chan defeated Eastern Washington’s Foshee/Mann 6-4 to secure their spot in the draw.

Olmos and Gjinaj battled against UC San Diego’s Leung/Wardy in their Black Draw match, but were bested 5-7 in SDSU's only dropped match of the day.

All seven Aztecs will be back for day two at the Aztec Tennis Center on Saturday beginning with doubles at 9 a.m., followed by singles at 9:45 a.m.
