SAN DIEGO – After winning the WAC regular season championship, the San Diego State men’s soccer team was heavily recognized in the WAC’s postseason awards.
Head coach Ryan Hopkins was named the Coach of the Year and Djibril Doumbia was named the Goalkeeper of the Year. In addition to Doumbia, the Aztecs placed three others on the All-WAC First Team with Reid Fisher, André Puente and Terence Okoeguale being honored.
Forwards Austin Brummett and Robbie Matei were named to the All-WAC Second Team and defender Cianole Nguepissi was on the All-Freshman Team.
The four Aztecs on the first team and the six total between the first and second team are both program records.
Hopkins led the Aztecs to their first ever conference championship. After going winless in the Pac-12 last year, SDSU finished undefeated in WAC conference play (7-0-1) and recorded shutouts in six of their eight conference matches. The Aztecs are currently ranked No. 25 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer.
Doumbia, the winner of the last two WAC Goalkeeper of the Week awards, has recorded four straight shutouts and led the WAC in shutouts per game (0.75), goals allowed average (0.25) and save percentage (.905) in conference play.
Fisher and Puente were two of the three defenders named to the All-WAC First Team. They helped the Aztecs lead the conference in shutouts per game, goals allowed average and shots on goals allowed per game in WAC matches. Combined with Doumbia, the Aztecs won three of the top four defensive honors. Fisher was named the WAC Preseason Defender of the Year and Puente was one of 16 defenders in the nation on the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Watch List.
Okoeguale had eight points in conference play with three goals and two assists. In conference play, he was fourth in the WAC in points per game (1.14) and tied for fifth in goals (3). On the year, he leads the Aztecs with 17 points and is tied for the team lead with six goals.
Matei scored three goals in conference play and is tied for Okoeguale for the team lead with six overall.
Brummett’s three assists in WAC matches are tied for fourth in the conference. He is also second in the WAC in shot accuracy (53%) and third in shots on goal per game (1.1).
Nguepissi, a freshman from Birmingham, England, started every WAC match on defense and helped SDSU post six clean sheets.
SDSU will play the winner of No. 4 Utah Valley and No. 5 San Jose State in the WAC semifinals Wednesday at 3 p.m. PT.
