Aztecs Head to UC Davis for First Road Game

The San Diego State women’s basketball team plays at UC Davis Friday at 5 p.m. for their first road game of the 2024-25 season. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s basketball team plays at UC Davis Friday at 5 p.m. for their first road game of the 2024-25 season. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ (subscription required).

 

Aztec Tidbits

  • SDSU won their season opener over Cal State San Marcos 76-48, their largest season opening win since 2011 (86-43 vs. Arkansas Pine-Bluff).
  • The Aztecs forced 28 turnovers which led to 36 points.
  • SDSU went 28-35 (80%) from the line. Their 28 made free throws was their second most in a game in the Mountain West era (since 1999).
  • The Aztecs showed off their depth with 11 Aztecs playing in the first quarter. 10 played at least 15 minutes, nine scored and four finished in double-digits.
  • Erin Houpt, who was playing in her first game as an Aztec after missing last year with injury, led the team with 13 points.
  • Adryana Quezada had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Cali Clark also had double-digits rebounds, finishing with 10 boards in her SDSU debut.
  • Since the beginning of last season, the Aztecs are 13-2 when they score 70 or more points.
  • Since the beginning of last season of the 2022-23 season, SDSU is 28-7 (.800) in home games.
  • The Aztecs have seven players in their fourth year or later and four in the fifth year or later (Fiso, Green, Quezada and Villalobos).
  • SDSU was one of 21 schools (6%) that didn’t lose any players to the transfer portal in the offseason.
  • The Aztecs were picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West preseason poll.
  • Adryana Quezada was on the preseason All-Mountain West team. She averaged a team-high 14.0 points per game last year and became the first Aztec in the Mountain West era (25 years) to shoot at least 50% from the field and 80% from the line.
  • Both Quezada and Villalobos have over 1,000 career points and 600 career rebounds. Quezada has scored 1,326 points and collected 644 rebounds (14.3 and 7.1 per game). Villalobos has 1,014 points and 651 rebounds.
  • The Aztecs have six newcomers, led by transfers Veronica Sheffey (San Diego) and Cali Clark (Colorado State). Sheffey, a point guard, was an All-WCC Second Team selection last year and Clark, a 6’3” forward, appeared in over 100 games at Colorado State.
  • SDSU set a program record for attendance last year.
  • The Aztecs non-conference schedule features six games against teams that won 20 or more games a year ago, and four against schools that made the postseason.
  • SDSU is playing in the Cancun Challenge over Thanksgiving where they will play Wisconsin, VCU and Providence.
  • This is head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson’s 12th season as San Diego State’s head coach.

 

Player Notes

Adryana Quezada (Senior, Forward, Frisco, Texas)

  • She is one of five players in the nation to have over 1,300 points and 600 rebounds while shooting at least 50% from the field and 70% from the line.
  • She has scored in double-digits in 66 of her 93 career games and in 28 of her 36 as an Aztec
  • On Monday, she had her 21st game with double-digit rebounds and 18th career double-double.
  • She is in her sixth year of college. She played her first two years at UT San Antonio, her junior year at Utah State and is now in her third year at SDSU (she redshirted the 2022-23 season).

 

Kim Villalobos (Senior, Forward, Los Angeles)

  • She is one of eight players in the nation with at least 1,000 points 600 rebounds, 175 assists, 150 steals and 75 blocks in her career.
  • Last year she was the only player in the Mountain West to finish in the top 10 in rebounds, steals and blocks.
  • Last year she became only the second Aztec to have at least 300 points, 200 rebounds, 75 assists and 50 steals in a season.

 

Erin Houpt (RS Junior, Guard, Danville, Ill.)

  • She is the only player in the nation to shoot at least 40% from three and 90% from the line in her career.
  • She is 93.2% (136-146) from the line in her career, the best in the nation among players with at least 100 made free throws.
  • Her 41.7% career three-point percentage is seventh in the nation among qualified players.

 

Cali Clark (Senior, Forward, Centennial, Colo.)

  • She was second in the nation last year in rebounds per minute, trailing only All-American Cameron Brink.

 

Naomi Panganiban (Freshman, Guard, San Diego)

  • She became the first true freshman to start the season opener since 2018 (Sophia Ramos and Mallory Adams).

 

Opponent Notebook (UC Davis)

  • The Aggies went 20-14 last year and 13-7 in the Big West.
  • They advanced to the Big West Championship game, where they lost to UC Irvine.
  • They won their season opener 93-36 over Simpson.
  • They were picked to finished third in the Big West.
  • Tova Sabel was named to the All-Big West Preseason Coaches Team.
  • Head coach Jennifer Gross is in her 14th season. She won five straight Big West Coach of the Year awards from 2017-21.

Series History 

  • UC Davis leads the all-time series 3-2.
  • The Aztecs are 0-2 all-time at Davis.
  • SDSU beat UC Davis last year 77-68 after finishing the game on a 22-5 run. Jada Lewis scored a career-high 25 points.
