SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis closed out its fall schedule on Sunday after totaling three wins in a split weekend at the Triton Fall Invitational and Dennis Rizza Intercollegiate Classic.
Freshman Paul Janson picked up one win against Nevada’s Axel Huysman at the Triton Invitational, taking the match 6-3, 6-2, but came up short 2-6, 4-6 in his Sunday matchup versus Diogo Tinoco of UC San Diego.
Marc Kleber was the only other Aztec to compete on Sunday. The freshman was bested 3-6, 5-7 by UC San Diego’s Zach Pellouchoud.
The final day of the Dennis Rizza Classic at the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. was canceled due to rain. Senior Liam Spiers and freshman Denis Maijorov led the Aztecs through two days of the tournament, each claiming one victory.
Spiers took down Emmett Potter of USC on Saturday in a tight matchup 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, (10-1). Maijorov posted the first win of the weekend on Friday, defeating UC Santa Barbara’s Gustav Thielgaard 6-2, 6-4.
The Aztecs conclude their fall season with a singles record of 18-35, and 7-9 in doubles. The spring season will get underway in January beginning with a non-conference schedule to be released soon.
