Four Aztecs Named to All-Mountain West Teams

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Four San Diego State women’s soccer players were named to All-Mountain West teams, the league announced Monday. Denise Castro earned a spot on the conference’s First Team while Trinity Coker, Emma Gaines-Ramos and Kali Trevithick were named to the Second Team.  


The All-Conference teams are voted on by the conference’s coaches and are based solely on play in conference matches. SDSU finished with a 6-2-3 record in Mountain West matches, highlighted by a 5-0-0 record at home against Mountain West competition.

Last season’s Offensive Player of the Year and an All-Mountain West selection for the fourth time in four seasons (3 First-Team appearances), Castro’s name can be found among the best in the conference in nearly every offensive statistic. In conference matches, she finished tied for the lead in goals (6) and goals per game (0.55) and tied for second in points (14) and points per game (1.27) while placing second in shots (38) and shots per game (3.45). Castro led San Diego State in goals, points, shots, shots on goal, game-winning goals and penalty kicks. Her two assists in conference play were tied for third on the Aztec roster. Castro had three goals in two matches against Nevada and UNLV and scored in three straight matches against San Jose State, Fresno State and Wyoming before finishing with assists in the final two regular season matches against Colorado State and New Mexico. Her three goals across the first two matches of conference competition earned her Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honors. Castro earned a start in all 11 Mountain West matches for San Diego State.

A first-time all-conference honoree, Coker placed in the top ten in the Mountain West in points (10), points per game (0.91), goals (3), goals per game (0.27), assists (4) and assists per game (0.36). She tied for third on the team in goals, placed second in assists and third in points during conference play. Coker scored in SDSU’s first two matches of the Mountain West season (Nevada and UNLV) and had assists in consecutive matches against Air Force and San Jose State, but the highlight of her conference season was a one goal, two assist performance in a 3-3 tie at Wyoming on October 24 that earned her a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week. Coker started in each of SDSU’s 11 conference matches.

Making her fourth appearance on an All-Mountain West team, Gaines-Ramos was an important contributor on the Aztec roster. She tied for the conference lead in assists (7) and assists per game (0.64) while finishing fourth in points (13) and points per game (1.18), Gaines-Ramos also placed in the top ten of the Mountain West in shots (31), shots per game (2.82), goals (3) and goals per game (0.27). The team leader in assists, she tied for third on the team in goals and finished just one point behind Castro’s team-leading 14. After a goal at Utah State, she tallied a three-point performance with a goal and an assist against Fresno State. Gaines-Ramos closed the regular season with assists in the final two matches against Colorado State and New Mexico and also scored against the Lobos. She started all 11 conference matches for the Aztecs.

Trevithick is also making an all-conference team for the first time. She scored the game-winning goal to beat Fresno State on October 20. 12 of her 25 shots during conference play were on goal (.480 shots on goal percentage). Trevithick appeared in 10 of the team’s 11 conference matches, starting all ten of them.

Fourth-seeded SDSU defeated fifth-seeded UNLV 3-1 in the First Round of the Mountain West Championship on Sunday night. On Wednesday, the Aztecs will face the top-seeded Boise State Broncos in the Semifinals at 7 p.m. on the SDSU Sports Deck. The winner will play the winner of No. 2-seed Utah State and No. 3-seed Colorado State in the Championship match on Saturday at 6 p.m. PT. The entire tournament is being broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
