CANCUN, Mexico – The San Diego State women’s basketball team improved to 8-0 with a 55-46 win over VCU (4-3) in their second game of the Cancun Challenge Friday afternoon.

The Aztecs struggled offensively but held the Rams to 28 percent shooting and without a bucket for nearly 10 minutes in the second half to pull out their second win in two days in Mexico.

“We’ve come down here and played two really physical teams in Wisconsin and VCU and we haven’t backed down,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “I’m really proud of that. This has been a great test to show who we want to be, and we answered the call today.”

Adryana Quezada led the Aztecs with 16 points on an efficient 8-for-11 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds. Veronica Sheffey had 11 points and Cali Clark finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.

After committing just seven turnovers the day prior against Wisconsin, the Aztecs turned the ball over 13 times in the first half Friday. However, SDSU trailed by just four points at the halftime break.

The Aztecs came out hot in the second half and scored 15 points in the first five and half minutes, more than they scored in either the first or second quarter.

SDSU held the Rams without a bucket for the final 5:37 of the third quarter and then for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter as they pushed their lead to eight points.

VCU would score just 20 points in the second half on 23.5% shooting.

The Aztecs were just 1-for-12 from three, but also held VCU to 4-for-17 shooting from three.
