BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The San Diego State women’s basketball team improved to 6-0 with a dominant 88-46 win at Cal State Bakersfield Friday evening. It’s the first time the Aztecs have started a season 6-0 since the 1988-89 season.
“We’ve been able to go on the road and get some wins,” Head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson said after the game. “That’s been our Achilles heel in the past.”
SDSU, who was without starters Adryana Quezada and Meghan Fiso, continued with their trend of balanced scoring with five players finishing in double digits.
Jazlen Green paced the Aztecs with a season-high 15 points. Freshman Nat Martinez, who made her first career start, had 13 points while playing a team-high 28 minutes. Cali Clark also made her first start as an Aztec and had 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.
Kim Villalobos did a little bit of everything and finished with 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Erin Houpt also scored in double-digits with 11 points.
In total, the Aztecs had seven players score between eight and 15 points.
A 13-0 SDSU run that was fueled by eight straight points by Jazlen Green gave the Aztecs a 20-6 lead after the first quarter. The Aztecs never looked back after that and poured in 32 points in the second quarter.
SDSU cooled off offensively in the third quarter but held Bakersfield to eight points to maintain a comfortable lead.
For the fifth time in six games, the Aztecs scored more than 30 points off the bench.
STAT OF THE GAME
The Aztecs outrebounded the Roadrunners 50-27 and 19-9 on the offensive glass.
THE NOTE
Cali Clark’s 16 rebounds was the most by an Aztec since Mallory Adams had 16 in the 2019 Mountain West Tournament. Clark only played 19 minutes.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
