COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- San Diego State women’s soccer brought home two of the three Mountain West weekly awards, the league announced Saturday. Dori Savage was named the Offensive Player of the Week and Mia Lane garnered Freshman of the Week for the Aztecs for their play in SDSU’s regular season finale against New Mexico.
In its final match of the regular season, SDSU (8-7-4, 6-2-3 Mountain West) took down New Mexico 4-1 on Thursday night.
After scoring the lone goal in the waning minutes of last Sunday’s victory over Colorado State, Savage struck again against the Lobos. Her goal in the 14th minute came just 16 minutes of game time after Sunday’s game winner. Both goals gave SDSU a 1-0 lead, which the Aztecs would not relinquish. She scored again in the 84th minute to pick up her first brace of the season and against Mountain West opposition in her career. She also had a pair of braces in non-conference matches last year. Savage started the match for the Aztecs and played for 50 minutes. Her two goals were her only shots of the match.
The winner of conference Freshman of the Week award in the opening week of the conference schedule, Lane garnered the accolade once more to close out the season. With the Aztecs leading 2-0 in the 40th minute, Lane received a pass from Carlin Blake on a free kick and scored with her right foot for her second goal this season and in her career. She joined Alexyz Nakamoto and Logan Nidy as the only Aztec freshmen to score multiple times in a season over the last three years. Lane appeared for 27 minutes in the match and her goal was her only shot attempt.
Fourth-seeded SDSU faces fifth-seeded UNLV in the First Round of the Mountain West Championship at 7 p.m. PT on Sunday night on the SDSU Sports Deck. The winner advances to Wednesday’s Semifinals. The entire tournament will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
