The Aztecs head north for a two-game road swing. They will play at California Baptist Wednesday at 5 p.m. and then at Cal State Bakersfield Friday at 6 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+

SAN DIEGO – The Aztecs head north for a two-game road swing. They will play at California Baptist Wednesday at 5 p.m. and then at Cal State Bakersfield Friday at 6 p.m. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+

 

Aztec Tidbits

  • SDSU is 4-0 and coming off a 73-62 win over San Francisco Saturday.
  • The Aztecs are 4-0 for the first time since the 1992-93 season when SDSU started 5-0.
  • SDSU trailed by 10 in the second quarter to USF, but then held the Dons to 25 percent shooting in the second half and outscored USF 43-26.
  • The Aztecs are one of just two Mountain West teams to be undefeated (Boise State)
  • SDSU leads the Mountain West in free throws made (19.3) and attempted (24.5) per game and in free throw percentage (78.6%). SDSU set a school record for free throw percentage last year (75.6%).
  • The Aztecs were 14-for-15 from the line vs. USF Saturday.
  • SDSU is second in the conference in turnovers forced per game (22.0) and turnover margin (+8.0).
  • The Aztecs have shown off their depth with 11 Aztecs averaging at least 10 minutes per game and nine different players have scored in double digits through just four games.
  • 44.2% of the SDSU’s scoring has come from their bench (32.5 of 73.5 points).
  • On Saturday vs. San Francisco, SDSU had a season-high 43 bench points. 35 of those came from the freshmen quartet of Nat Martinez (14), Naomi Panganiban (11), Kaelyn Hamilton (6) and Bailey Barnhard (4). Barnhard was making her collegiate debut.
  • Since the beginning of the 2022-23 season, the Aztecs are 25-4 (.862) when they score 70 or more points and 42-9 (.824) when they score 60 or more.
  • Four Aztecs are shooting 50% or better from the field: Erin Houpt, Adryana Quezada, Cali Clark and Veronica Sheffey.
  • Since the beginning of the 2022-23 season, SDSU is 30-7 (.811) in home games.
  • The win Saturday was head coach Stacie Terry-Hutson’s 100th career home win.
  • SDSU has seven players in their 4th year or later and five in the 5th year or later (Clark, Fiso, Green, Quezada and Villalobos), three of which start.
  • SDSU was one of 21 schools (6%) that didn’t lose any players to the transfer portal in the offseason.
  • Adryana Quezada was on the preseason All-Mountain West team. She averaged a team-high 14.0 points per game last year and became the first Aztec in the Mountain West era (25 years) to shoot at least 50% from the field and 80% from the line.
  • Both Quezada and Villalobos have over 1,000 career points and 600 career rebounds. Quezada has scored 1,365 points and collected 669 rebounds (14.2 and 7.0 per game). Villalobos has 1,032 points and 665 rebounds.
  • SDSU won their season opener over Cal State San Marcos 76-48, their largest season opening win since 2011 (86-43 vs. Arkansas Pine-Bluff).
  • The Aztecs have six newcomers, led by transfers Veronica Sheffey (San Diego) and Cali Clark (Colorado State). Sheffey, a point guard, was an All-WCC Second Team selection last year and Clark, a 6’3” forward, appeared in over 100 games at Colorado State.
  • SDSU set a program record for attendance last year.
  • The Aztecs non-conference schedule features six games against teams that won 20 or more games a year ago, and four against schools that made the postseason.
  • SDSU is playing in the Cancun Challenge over Thanksgiving where they will play Wisconsin, VCU and Providence.
  • This is Stacie Terry-Hutson’s 12th season as San Diego State’s head coach.

 

Player Notes

  • Adryana Quezada is one of five players in the nation to have over 1,300 points and 600 rebounds while shooting at least 50% from the field and 70% from the line.
  • Quezada is shooting 64.7% from the field this season, which is second in the Mountain West and 25th in the nation.
  • Quezada has scored in double-digits in 69 of her 96 career games and in 31 of her 39 as an Aztec, including all four games this season.
  • Kim Villalobos is one of eight players in the nation with at least 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 175 assists, 150 steals and 75 blocks in her career.
  • Villalobos is in the top ten in school history in career games, rebounds and blocks.
  • Last year Villalobos was the only player in the Mountain West to finish in the top 10 in rebounds, steals and blocks.
  • Last year Villalobos became only the second Aztec in the Mountain West era to have at least 300 points, 200 rebounds, 75 assists and 50 steals in a season.
  • Erin Houpt is the only player in the nation to shoot at least 40% from three and 90% from the line in her career.
  • Houpt is 92.9% (143-154) from the line in her career, the second best in the nation (minimum 100 made free throws).
  • Houpt’s 42.0% career three-point percentage is sixth in the nation among qualified players.
  • Cali Clark is 11th in the nation among active players in rebounds per minute (minimum 50 games).
  • Clark was second in the nation last year in rebounds per minute, trailing only All-American Cameron Brink.
  • Nat Martinez scored a career-high 14 points Saturday vs. San Francisco. 10 of them came in a span of 4:30 minutes during SDSU’s third quarter run, including a four-point play.
  • Naomi Panganiban became the first true freshman to start the season opener for SDSU since 2018 (Sophia Ramos and Mallory Adams).

 

Opponent Notebook (California Baptist)

  • The Lancers are 0-3 on the year.
  • All three of their losses have been by double-digits.
  • They were picked to finish second in the WAC
  • They went 28-4 last year and 18-2 in the WAC.
  • They were the WAC regular season and tournament champions and made the NCAA Tournament where they lost to No. 2 seed UCLA in the first round.

  • Grace Schmidt is averaging 18.0 points per game on 60% shooting.
