LAS VEGAS – San Diego State women’s tennis put up a dominant performance on Wednesday at the inaugural Mountain West Fall Qualifier in Las Vegas, going 8-1 on the day to advance all four participating athletes in the main draw.
In pursuit of an ITA Conference Masters tournament bid, the Aztecs keep their championship hopes alive into the second day of action.
After defeating Nevada’s Petra Janigova/Kennedy Robinson 8-4, Gloria Alogo and Ninon Martinache advance to Thursday’s doubles quarterfinal alongside Jo-Yee Chan and Liisa Varul, who earned an 8-6 win over Silvia Maria Costache/Amahee Charrier of Nevada.
Following their doubles showing, the Aztecs went 3-1 in the singles round of 32. Martinache took down Utah State’s Ana Sabikova in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Alogo posted a commanding win as well, defeating Wyoming’s Dilnaz Mashabayeya 6-3, 6-0. Chan capped off the first-round victories with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Sofia Mavor of Air Force.
Varul was bested 3-6, 1-6 by Nevada’s Amahee Charrier in the team’s only dropped match of the opening day.
Going straight into the singles round of 16 was no issue for the Aztecs, who went undefeated, advancing all three athletes to the quarterfinals. Chan earned a tough three-set win over Rebekkah Gaines of New Mexico, putting up a score of 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3. Martinache followed suit with a 6-0, 7-6 (7-2) victory over New Mexico’s Maud Vandeputte. Alogo then closed out the day with the last quarterfinal bid, taking down Colorado State’s Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya 6-4, 6-3.
The Aztecs will kick off day two with the doubles quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m. PT, followed by the singles quarterfinals at 10:30.
