LARAMIE, WYO. – The San Diego State women’s soccer team was in Wyoming on Thursday for a daytime match against the Cowgirls. After Wyoming scored first, Logan Nidy scored to tie the match heading into halftime. The Cowgirls added on two more goals in the second half, but Trinity Coker and Denise Castro came in clutch with a goal each in the final 12 minutes of action to secure a 3-3 tie for the Aztecs.
Denise Castro had the first open look for San Diego State (6-7-4, 4-2-3 Mountain West) when she put a shot on goal in just the sixth minute, but Wyoming keeper Haley Bartel was able to make the save. In the 22nd minute, Wyoming (4-6-7, 2-3-4 MW) got on the board on a goal by Alyssa Bedard with an assist from Lily Brongo. Bedard took another shot on goal six minutes later but Aztec goalie Alexa Madueno saved it to keep the score at 1-0. In the 34th minute, Trinity Coker made a deep pass to Logan Nidy, who scored her first goal of the season to even the score. The SDSU attack was aggressive, trying to tack on another goal before halftime, but Bartel was able to stop shots on goal from Kali Trevithick and Olivia Sekimoto.
Nidy had another scoring opportunity at the 52-minute mark, but Bartel saved it. The Cowgirls scored again in the 55th minute on a Bedard flip throw in that bounced off Maddie Chance and found the right foot of Raegan Richardson, who booted it into the goal. The Aztecs had a prime opportunity to tie the match once more when Kali Trevithick was awarded a penalty kick in the 59th minute but Bartel made the save, moving to her left. Richardson scored again in the 62nd minute, assisted by Bedard once more to make the score 3-1. Carlin Blake forced another Bartel save four minutes later. Then, Wyoming’s bench was given a yellow card in the 72nd minute.
The match headed into the 79th minute with the Aztecs still trailing by two. The Scarlet and Black did not give up. At 78:21, Coker took a shot on a free kick and buried the ball in the back of the net to cut the deficit to one. Castro took a nice shot in the 83rd minute, but Bartel made a diving stop. Four minutes later, Coker passed to Castro in the box, who headed it into the goal to complete the comeback and tie the match at three. Neither team took another shot, and the match ended in a draw.
San Diego State tallied more shots on goal (10-4) and corner kicks (6-5) while Wyoming had more shots (17-16), fouls (14-8) and saves (7-1).
Madueno’s save moved her career total to 387 as she closes in on 400.
Nidy’s goal was her first goal ever in Mountain West competition and her first score since September 9, 2022, when she was a freshman.
Coker’s four points (one goal, two assists) were a career-high and instrumental to securing the tie. Denise Castro is the only other Aztec this season with four or more points in one match. Coker’s two assists were more than she had in any of her first three seasons of her collegiate career.
Castro has scored in bunches this season as she had five goals in a four-match stretch from September 15-29 and now has a goal in three straight matches going back to last Thursday’s win against San Jose State. Her 80 career points are fourth in program history and her 34th goal moves Castro into a tie with Catherine McGuire for third most in school history.
SDSU is in fifth place in the Mountain West with two matches to play. Six teams qualify for the conference tournament, held on the SDSU Sports Deck from November 3-9. Based on the current standings, the Aztecs would face the UNLV Rebels, whom SDSU defeated 2-0 on September 29.
San Diego State will return home to face Colorado State for Senior Day at noon on Sunday on the SDSU Sports Deck. The match is free to attend and will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
