OKLAHOMA CITY -- The San Diego State men’s golf team fell to top-ranked Oklahoma, 3.5-1.5, in the third-place event of match play on the final day of the Jackson T. Stephens Cup Wednesday in Oklahoma City.
The Aztecs qualified for the match-play portion of the JTS after carding a 12-over-par 852 through three rounds of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday. SDSU earned the No. 3 seed for match play with the Sooners taking the No. 4 seed with a 15-over 855.
Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) picked up the lone win of the day for San Diego State, beating Matthew Troutman, 2UP (two holes up with two to play). The match was all square through 12 holes when Troutman birdied the par-4, 294-yard 12th. Each player went birdie-par-par on the next three holes, while Kowack’s par was good enough to win the par-4, 507-yard 16th. Both players parred the par-4, 439-yard 17th and Kowack clinched the win with another par on the par-4, 482-yard 18th to a Troutman bogey.
Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) was the only other Aztec not to lose his match as he tied Jase Summy. Chokprajakchat opened a 2-hole lead with consecutive eagles on the 12th and the par-5, 581-yard 13th. Summy, however, got one back by winning the par-4, 400-yard 14th. Each player parred No. 16 and No. 17, but a Chokprajakchat bogey on the 18th with a Summy par made it all square for the day.
Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) went out first for SDSU, but lost, 5&4 (down five holes with four to play). Takis was 2-up through three holes, but didn’t win a hole the rest of the way.
Senior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) lost in the fourth group, 6&5. Lague’s lone win came with a birdie on the par-4, 405-yard 10th.
Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) anchored the San Diego State starting 5, but came up short against Drew Godman, 2&1. Hastings was down two holes through the first nine but back-to-back pars on No. 10 and No. 11 brough him back to all square. Each player birdied the 12th and exchanged birdies over the following two holes - Goodman on the 13th and Hastings on the 14th. Goodman birdied the par-3, 152-yard 15th to a Hastings’ par and then won the 16th with a par. Each team parred the 17th and Goodman captured the match, 2&1.
No. 14 Oklahoma State claimed the championship with a 4-1 victory over No. 20 SMU. No. 26 Florida State and Arkansas did not advance to Wednesday’s match play after finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, in the stroke portion of the event.
