OKLAHOMA CITY -- The San Diego State men’s golf team shot the best round of the day with an even-par 280 in the second round to move up to third place after 36 holes of the suspended Jackson T. Stephens Cup Monday in Oklahoma City. The Aztecs, who opened with a 12-over-par 292 on the par-70, 6,964-yard Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, are third of out six teams in the invitational event at 12-over 572.

Battling windy conditions and beating the setting sun, SDSU’s 280 was the best round of the day by three strokes over top-ranked Oklahoma’s opening 283. No. 20 SMU leads the way at +8 with players still to finish, while No. 14 Oklahoma State (+10), San Diego State (+12), No. 1 Oklahoma (+16), No. 26 Florida State (+29) and Arkansas (+38) round out suspended first day.

Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) leads the way for SDSU and is in a four-way tie for third at 2-over 142 through two rounds. Kowack opened with a 3-over 73, which featured an eagle on the par-4, 294-yard 12th hole and two birdies, but also seven bogeys. Kowack bounced back in the second round with a 1-under 69 with two birdies and just one bogey.

Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for 10th at 4-over 144. Chokprajakchat opened with a 6-over 76 but rebounded with a 2-under 68 in the second round. Chokprajakchat reached -4 in the second round with a birdie on his 14th hole, which was the par-3, 179-yard sixth. He followed with consecutive pars but finished with a double bogey on the par-4, 486-yard 18th.

Seniors Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS), and freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) are tied for 12th at +5. Hastings overcame a 75 in the first round with an even-par 70 in the second round, sinking three birdies with three bogeys.

Lague and Takis, meanwhile, shot matching 72s in the first round and 73s in the second round. Lague had third birdies with three bogeys in the first round with a double bogey on the par-4, 400-yard 14th, and then had two birdies and five bogeys in the second round.

Takis opened with three birdies and three bogeys, along with a double bogey on the par-5, 581-yard 13th. In the second round, he had one birdie and four bogeys.
