OKLAHOMA CITY -- The San Diego State men’s golf team finished stroke play at 12-over-par 852 on Tuesday at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup in Oklahoma City, falling two shots short of playing for the championship in match play on Wednesday. The Aztecs, who carded an even-par 280 today on the par-70, 6,964-yard Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club, will now face top-ranked Oklahoma in Wednesday’s third-place match.

Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) tied for fourth out of 36 golfers in stroke play at 2-over 212 following an even-par 70 in today’s final round. Starting on the 10th hole, Kowack reached 2-under with consecutive birdies on the par-4, 385 first hole and par-4, 417-yard second. Bogeys, however, on the par-3, 179-yard sixth and the par-4, 330-yard eighth doomed Kowack, who parred the par-4, 486-yard ninth to close out his 70.

Senior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) and junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for ninth at 4-over 214. Lague fired a 1-under 69 today with two birdies and a lone bogey on the par-3, 184-yard third hole. Chokprajakchat, meanwhile, shot an even-par 70 with four birdies and four bogeys, including on two of his final three holes.

Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) came in a tie for 14th at +6 after a 1-over 71 today. Takis opened with three bogeys through his first nine, but rallied with a 2-under back nine, highlighted by consecutive birdies on the par-4, 451-yard fourth hole and the par-5, 604-yard fifth.

Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) came in solo 22nd at +8. The two-time all-Mountain West selection shot a 3-over 73 on Tuesday, bogeying four of his first six holes, but going bogey-free the rest of the way with his lone birdie coming on the par-4, 330-yard eighth.

SMU’s William Sides beat Oklahoma State’s Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson on the first playoff hole after each finished at 1-under 209 for the tournament. Florida State’s Tyler Weaver came in third at +1.

No. 14 Oklahoma State (+6) and No. 20 SMU (+10) will meet in match play for the Jackson T. Stephens Cup title on Wednesday. The Aztecs will play top-ranked Oklahoma for third place, while No. 26 Florida State and Arkansas will square off in the fifth-place match.
