TEMPE, Ariz. – Mathieu Josserand and Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice of San Diego State men’s tennis are advancing to day three of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Tempe, Ariz. after picking up a pair of wins on Friday.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice cruised through the singles round of 64 with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win over Cal Poly’s Raz Haviv. He will advance in the main draw alongside Josserand who defeated UC Riverside’s Justin Lamy 7-5, 6-2. Alexander Mandma came up short in two close sets 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) against Neo Niedner of USD.
The Aztecs will not advance in doubles play. Josserand and Chusseau were bested 8-5 by Hawai’i’s Diego Dalisay and Sohta Urano. Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Mandma fell 1-8 to ASU’s Tanner Povey and Constantinos Koshis.
The singles round of 32 will get underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday with Josserand facing off against Arizona’s Casper Christensen and Gonzalez Fitzmaurice taking on Savriyan Danilov of USD.
