SAN DIEGO –San Diego State’s Danny O’Neil (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral High) has been named the Mountain West Freshman of the Week for the second straight week. He is the first Aztec to earn back-to-back weekly conference honors since Matt Araiza received consecutive special teams weekly awards Oct. 18-25, 2021.

O’Neil was 16-of-27 for a season and career-high 254 yards leading the Aztecs to their second consecutive fourth quarter comeback victory at Wyoming and a 2-0 mark in conference play. In the fourth quarter alone, he was 4-of-7 for 127 yards leading back-to-back scoring drives including a 27-yard touchdown pass and the game-winning field goal. According to Pro Football Focus, his 86.4 passing grade ranked sixth best in FBS during week seven (min. 30 drop backs).

Through his first five career games, he is 87-of-140 for 1,045 yards and six touchdowns. He began his career with 127 straight passes without throwing an interception before the streak was snapped late in the second quarter at Wyoming. His 137.56 pass efficiency rating for the season ranks third in the Mountain West (59th in FBS) while his 12.01 yards per completion is fourth, 62.1 completion percentage is fifth and 209 passing yards per game and 17.4 completions per game are sixth in the conference.
