SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men’s tennis is gearing up for the second tournament of the fall slate, sending four athletes to the University of San Diego to compete at the USTA SoCal Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday.
Returning upperclassmen Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Mathieu Josserand will be joined by freshmen Paul Janson and Louis Chusseau at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
Competition is set to begin at 9 a.m. PT with the doubles qualifying round, followed by the singles round of 32 at 1 p.m.
Entering his junior year, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice is coming off a successful sophomore season where he led the Aztecs in doubles wins, earning 21 overall, four in the Mountain West and six in tournament play. He also recorded the second-most singles wins, earning 18 overall.
One of three seniors in the program, Josserand brings valuable veteran experience to this year’s young roster. Having made over 50 appearances as an Aztec, the native of Neuilly sur Sens, France will play a key leadership role this season.
Janson, a freshman out of Munich, Germany, has one tournament under his belt. He made his debut at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. on September 13 where he earned two consolation singles wins, as well as two consolation doubles vitories paired up with Denis Maijorov.
This will be the first collegiate appearance for Chusseau, who comes to SDSU from La Saussaye, France.
