SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team is tied for 10th place after the first day of The Tindall at 5-over-par 573 on the par-71, 7,106-yard Aldarra Golf Club Monday in Sammamish, Washington.

The Aztecs opened with a 1-under 283 in the morning round but carded a 6-over 290 in the afternoon and are tied with host Washington in the 14-team field at +5. Utah leads the way through 36 holes at 20-under 548, while Pepperdine and California are tied for second at -15. Arizona (-12) and South Carolina (-8) round out the top 5.

Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is tied for 18th out of 80 golfers at 2-under 140 to pace SDSU. Kowack opened the day with a 1-over 72 and then carded a 4-under 68 in the second round to move up 18 spots. His 68 was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 522-yard 12th hole - his third hole of the round - as he got to 5-under through his first seven holes. In all, his second round featured the mentioned eagle, five birdies and four bogeys.

Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) is also among the top-25 and the only other San Diego State golfer under par at 1-under 141. Takis opened with a 4-under 67 thanks to six birdies and four bogeys but settled for a 74 in the nightcap despite an eagle on the 12th, his closing hole.

Seniors Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS), meanwhile, are each tied for 31st at +1. Hastings went 70-73 with a combined five birdies and six bogeys. Competing as an individual, Lague opened with a 69 with three birdies and a bogey, and followed with a 74 thanks to three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey on the 12th hole.

Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) (T-60th, +7) and sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) (T-78th, +16) will each look to climb the leaderboard in Tuesday’s final round.

Utah’s Davis Johnson (-9) has a one-stroke lead over teammate Sergio Jimenez (-8), Pepperdine’s Luke Bailey (-8) and Washington’s Drew Warford (-8) through 36 holes.

SDSU will tee off from the 10th hole in Tuesday’s final round with Saint Mary’s, Washington and Oregon, beginning at 8:55 a.m. PT.
