SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State men’s golf team continues its busy week to the start of the 2024-25 season Monday when it travels to the Pacific Northwest to compete in The Tindall in Sammamish, Washington.
The 54-hole event will be contested over two days with two rounds slated for Monday, beginning with an 8 a.m. PT shotgun start, and the final round set for Tuesday based on the scores of the first two rounds on the par-72, 7,016-yard Aldarra Golf Club.
This is the second tournament for the Aztecs in five days after they opened their season with a sixth-place finish at the William H. Tucker Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico, carding 12-over-par 876 on the par-72, 7,546-yard UNM Championship Course on Friday and Saturday.
Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) was SDSU’s top finisher, tying for sixth out of 96 golfers at 3-under 213. Competing as an individual, sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) tied for 26th along with junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) at 4-over 220. Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) tied for 44th at +7, while junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) tied for 54th, and senior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) came in a tie for 61st at +9.
San Diego State entered the season ranked 24th in the preseason Golf Channel poll. Joining the Aztecs at The Tindall are host Washington, No. 15 Arizona, No. 19 UCLA, No. 21 Pepperdine, California, Nevada, Ohio State, Oregon, Oregon State, Saint Mary’s, Seattle, South Carolina and Utah.
SDSU head coach Ryan Donovan has selected his starting five of Hastings, Kowack, Chokprajakchat, Sampson and Takis, with Lague competing as an individual.
The Aztec starting 5 will tee off on holes 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13, playing alongside California, Oregon State and South Carolina.
San Diego State is competing on Aldarra Golf Club for what appears to be just the second time after taking eighth at the 2017 NCAA Washington Regional at 30-over 882. PJ Samiere was the top Aztec finisher at the event, tying for 22nd at 5-over 218.
Built on the original site of the Boeing family farm, Aldarra Golf Club offers a challenging 18-hole layout that meanders through rolling terrain with stunning views of nearby Mt. Si and the Cascade mountains. Just minutes east of Seattle, Aldarra is the only golf course in Washington designed by world renowned golf course designer Tom Fazio. Playing through wetlands, mountain streams, and old growth timber of cedar, oak, and maple, the course creates an environment free of distraction and hassle.
Following its play at The Tindall, the Aztecs will compete at the prestigious Jackson T. Stephens Cup, Oct. 21-23, in Oklahoma City.
