Aztecs Take Sixth at William H. Tucker Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team finished in sixth place at the William H. Tucker Invitational, which was completed Saturday on the par-72, 7,546-yard UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Aztecs carded a 13-over-par 301 and finished at 12-over 876 for the tournament. Colorado was the only team to shoot under par on the final day and came from 11 shots back to finish at 12-under 852 beat the tournament host New Mexico (-11) by a stroke. Long Beach State (-3), UNLV (+2) and Grand Canyon (+2) also finished ahead of SDSU.

Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) was San Diego State’s top finisher, tying for sixth out of 96 golfers at 3-under 213 following a 1-over 73 today. Opening on the par-4, 428-yard sixth hole, Hastings started with 12 consecutive pars before an unfortunate double-bogey on the par-5, 544-yard 18th. He followed with a birdie on the par-5, 544-yard first hole and parred out for his 73.

Competing as an individual, sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) tied for 26th along with junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) at 4-over 220. Sampson shot an even-par 72 with three birdies, one bogey and a double bogey. Chokprajakchat, meanwhile, overcame a bad start with five consecutive bogeys and six through his first seven holes, by later birdieing four straight holes. One more bogey accounted for his 75.

Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) tied for 44th at +7 with a 5-over 77 today, while junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) tied for 54th at +8 following a 79 today, and senior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) came in a tie for 61st at +9 after a final-round 76.

New Mexico’s Carson Herron and Alvaro Portillo shared medalist honors at -8 on their home course, while Colorado’s Dylan McDermott (-5), Long Beach State’s Alejandro De Castro (-4) and Colorado’s Justin Biwer (-4) rounded out the top 5.

SDSU immediately heads to King County, Washington, to compete in Washington’s The Tindall, Sept. 23-24, at Aldarra Golf Club.
