ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team is tied for sixth place after the first day of the William H. Tucker Invitational Friday in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Aztecs, who earlier opened with a 1-over 289 on the par-72, 7,546-yard UNM Championship Course, shot a 3-under 286 in the second round and tire at 1-under 575 through 36 holes, tied with both Santa Clara and Stetson. Tournament host New Mexico leads the way at 21-under par, while Grand Canyon (-11), Colorado (-10), Long Beach State (-6) and Arkansas State (-2) round out the top 5.

Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) leads the way for the Aztecs, sitting in a tie for seventh place out of 96 golfers at 4-under 140 following back-to-back 70s. Hastings had four birdies and two bogeys in each round.

Juniors Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) and Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy), meanwhile, are tied for 29th at 1-over 145. Chokprajakchat rebounded from a 3-over 75 in his morning round with a 2-under 70. He had four birdies in his second round, all over his final 11 holes. Kowack shot a 71 and a 74 on the day, posting a combined eight birdies.

Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) is tied for 36th in his first collegiate competition at 2-over 146 following rounds of 74 and 72.

Competing as an individual, sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) is tied for 54th at +7 (69-79), while senior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) is tied for 61st at 8-over 149 (74-75).

New Mexico’s Carson Herron and Alvaro Portillo are 1-2 through 36 holes on their home course. Herron is at 11-under, while Portillo is two shots back at -9. There’s a four-way tie for third at 5-under 139, one spot ahead of Hastings and four others.

The final round is set for 7:45 a.m. MT (6:45 a.m. PT) Tuesday.
