Aztecs Win Four in Fall Season Opener

The San Diego State women's tennis team made their first appearance of the season on Thursday at the USTA Intercollegiate Championships, with five athletes making their debuts as Aztecs.

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women's tennis team made their first appearance of the season on Thursday at the USTA Intercollegiate Championships, with five athletes making their debuts as Aztecs.

After going 1-1 in doubles play, the ladies recorded wins in three of their seven singles matches.

Doubles
Junior Gloria Alogo and freshman Liisa Varul paired up for the first doubles match of the season, coasting to a 6-2 first round win over Nevada’s Doga Akyurek and Wiem Boubaker.

Up against ASU’s Emilija Tverijonaite and Aiya Nupbay, Zoe Olmos and sophomore transfer Vesa Gjinaj fell 6-2.

With a first round bye, junior transfers Jo-Yee Chan and Ninon Martinache look to get their first win as a pair in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Singles
Following a solid doubles performance, Alogo kicked off singles action with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over BYU’s Hibi Heni. Olmos followed suit with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over BYU’s Bitsy Tullis.

In her first match as an Aztec, Chan faced off against Nevada’s Silvia Maria Costache, recording a commanding 6-3, 6-0 win.

Gjinaj, Varul, Martinache and Roesch all battled in their respective singles matches, but were ultimately bested by their opponents.

The USTA Championships will continue tomorrow beginning with Alogo/Varul and Chan/Martinache in the doubles quarterfinals at 10 a.m..
