SAN DIEGO – The Mountain West’s 12 women’s soccer head coaches have predicted that the San Diego State Aztecs will win their second straight conference regular season title. The announcement was made at the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Wednesday. SDSU also had a trio of players voted to the conference’s watch list.

San Diego State has been predicted to finish in the top two of the preseason poll in 14 of the last 15 years. The Aztecs also lead the conference with seven regular-season and five tournament titles.

SDSU tallied eight first place votes and 117 points to lead the voting. The other four first place votes were split between Utah State (107 points) and Colorado State (99 points). Boise State tied Colorado State with 99 points, followed by New Mexico’s 76 points and Nevada’s 56 points. Fresno State and UNLV each had 55 points and the conference was rounded out by Air Force (37 points), San Jose State (34 points), Wyoming (32 points) and Colorado College (25 points).

San Diego State is returning ten of its 11 starters and six of seven All-Mountain-West players from last season’s Mountain West championship roster. Mountain West Watch List midfielder Denise Castro led the team with 10 goals and six assists a year ago. Joining Castro on the watch list are forward Emma Gaines-Ramos, who tied for third in both goals and assists with five apiece, and defender Grace Goins, who played all 1820 minutes in 2023. SDSU also returns goalkeeper Alexa Madueno, who led the Mountain West in save percentage while tallying the second most saves in a season in program history (101).

The Aztecs’ regular season begins on Thursday, August 15, when SDSU hosts Cal State Bakersfield at Snapdragon Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
