SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team will head west on the eight freeway on Thursday night to the campus of the University of San Diego to battle the Toreros in an exhibition match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.
San Diego State is returning ten of its 11 starters and six of seven All-Mountain-West players from last season’s Mountain West championship roster. Midfielder Denise Castro led the team with 10 goals and six assists a year ago and goalkeeper Alexa Madueno paced the Mountain West in save percentage while tallying the second most saves in a season in program history (101).
In historical matchups against the crosstown opponent, the Aztecs hold a 12-8-2 advantage. Last season, San Diego State earned a 4-0 shutout win against the Toreros at Snapdragon Stadium. The Aztecs have not lost to San Diego since a 1-0 result in the 2019 season.
SDSU comes in as the winners of its last two exhibition matches. The Scarlet and Black took down UC Riverside 2-1 last season and Arizona by the same score in 2022. The 2022 win over Arizona snapped a five-match slide in exhibition matches going back to 2016.
The Aztecs kick off their regular season next Thursday, when they host Cal State Bakersfield at Snapdragon Stadium at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast on Mountain West Network.
