SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team continued its 2024 season on Sunday when it took on the Weber State Wildcats on the SDSU SportsDeck. Grace Goins scored her first collegiate goal in the 59th minute but the Wildcats evened the score eight minutes later as the score finished with a 1-1 draw.

The offenses were quiet in the first half, with Alexa Madueno saving both Weber State shots on goal in the 14th and 30th minutes. Each team had a pair of shots that missed the goal, and the Wildcats had their only corner kick of the match.

Things picked up in the second half. San Diego State got the ball down near the Weber State goal in the 50th minute, earning two corners and firing four shots on goal in a three-minute stretch, but all three were saved by Hadley Harris. Harris came on in the second half for Maya Cordova, who was in goal for WSU in the first half.

SDSU broke through in the 59th minute as Carlin Blake took the ball into the right corner and passed it to Grace Goins right in front of the goal. Goins booted it in for her first collegiate goal to give the Aztecs a 1-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Weber State’s Ali Swensen broke away from the pack and had a 1-on-1 opportunity, but Madueno made a diving stop to keep the Wildcats off the board. Just a couple of minutes later, in the 67th minute, Sayler Schlosser passed to Swensen, who broke free again, this time finding the back of the net for the equalizer.

Neither team was able to get a shot on goal the remainder of the match with Aztec midfielder Denise Castro picking up a yellow card in the 84th minute. Just a few seconds later, Castro had an open shot that looked like it could reclaim the lead for San Diego State, but she pulled it wide right.

The Aztecs finished the match with more shots (17-10), shots on goal (5-4), corners (4-1) and fouls (11-5) while the Wildcats had more saves (4-3).

A 2024 Mountain West Player to Watch, Goins’ goal marked her first time earning points since she had her lone career assist against Idaho exactly two years to the day before Sunday’s match (Aug. 18, 2022).

Madueno’s three saves moved her up to 315 for her career, just 23 behind Aubree Southwick’s program record of 338.

The Aztecs will be back at the SDSU SportsDeck on Thursday, August 22, for a 7 p.m. match against the Stanford Cardinal, who are currently ranked second in the nation. Admission is free and the match will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
