SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team will begin its 2024 season this week with a pair of home matches. The Aztecs take on Cal State Bakersfield at Snapdragon Stadium at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 15. SDSU returns to the SDSU Sports Deck for a noon match against Weber State on Sunday, August 18. The Aztecs shut out the Roadrunners 3-0 in the teams’ lone meeting on the SDSU Sports Deck in 2007. Cal State Bakersfield finished 2023 with a 3-10-4 record but CSUB defeated Trinity Western 6-2 in its exhibition match on August 8.
San Diego State has yet to allow a goal in Snapdragon Stadium. The Aztecs defeated San Jose State 2-0 in 2022 and San Diego 4-0 in 2023. SDSU is seeking its fifth consecutive win in a season opener. Going back to 2020, the Aztecs beat Sacred Heart 2-0, Nebraska 2-1, Army 1-0 and Nevada 3-2. San Diego State is also riding eight-match winning streaks in both night matches and Thursday matches.
The Wildcats and the Aztecs have met three times, each ending with San Diego State victorious and Weber State scoreless. The final scores were 2-0 in 2002, 1-0 in 2003 and 3-0 in 2016. The Wildcats finished with a 1-9-5 record during the 2023 campaign but earned a 5-1 win in their exhibition match against Salt Lake Community College. Weber State will open its season with a home match against Utah Tech on Thursday, August 15.
The Aztecs will stay in America’s Finest City for the remainder of August with home matches on the SDSU Sports Deck at 7 p.m. against Stanford on August 22 and Oklahoma State on August 31. Both matches will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
