LAS VEGAS -- San Diego State has been picked to finish in eighth place in the 2024 preseason Mountain West preseason poll, the league announced Wednesday morning. The preseason poll and all-conference team are voted on by media representatives who cover the conference.
The Aztecs, who are coming off a 4-8 season but are in the first year under new head coach Sean Lewis, garnered 251 points, easily ahead of Hawai’i (214), San José State (185), New Mexico (85) and Nevada (77) in the 12-team conference. Defending champion Boise State finished with 543 points and 38 of the 46 first-place votes, while UNLV (471) and Fresno State (460) logged four first-place votes apiece. Air Force is fourth with 384 points, and Colorado State (337), Wyoming (296) and Utah State (285) are also ahead of SDSU.
For just the third time in the 26-year history of the Mountain West, SDSU did not have a player earn preseason MW all-conference honors. Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty was named the preseason offensive player of the year, while teammate Amed Hassanein and UNLV’s Jackson Woodard shared co-defensive player of the year honors. UNLV’s Jacob De Jesus, meanwhile, was chosen as the MW Special Teams Player of the Year.
San Diego State’s first season under Sean Lewis begins Aug. 31 at Snapdragon Stadium against Texas A&M-Commerce. The Aztecs will play six of their 12 games in 2024 at Snapdragon Stadium. Seven of SDSU’s 11 FBS opponents made a bowl game a year ago.
Season tickets for the 2024 campaign start at just $200 ($175 plus $25 Aztec Club Membership), only $33.33 per game. Note that there is also Stadium Excellence Gift attached to each ticket, which is a one-time tax-deductible gift that helps offset the building costs of the state-of-art Snapdragon Stadium, and is payable over three years (interest free).
Fans are encouraged to purchase season tickets with benefits featuring interest-free payment plans, pre-sale access for most third-party events, and discounts on merchandise at the team store, additional single-game tickets and food/beverage. Preseason All-Conference Notes: San Diego State did not have a player make the all-conference team for just the third time in league history (since 1999) … An Aztec has not earned preseason all-league honors now in 2002, 2007 and 2024 … The Aztecs did not have a preseason all-MW performer on defense for first time since 2017 … SDSU did not have a preseason all-league offensive player for the first time since 2020 … The Aztecs had at least three all-MW preseason picks in nine straight years prior to this year after doing so just four times over the previous 10 years (2005-14).

Preseason All-Conference Team Notes: This is the second Mountain West preseason poll without divisions since 2012 when the Aztecs were picked fifth and captured the league title along with Boise State and Fresno State … SDSU’s eighth-place prediction is its lowest since being picked eighth in 2009 (note that from 2013-22 the league was split in divisions and out of just six teams, although San Diego State never was picked worse than third) … The Aztecs, who averaged a predicted finish of 6.5 from 2005-12, have ended up at or better than their predicted finish in 10 of the last 15 seasons and 13 times over the past 19 years … SDSU has won two of the last nine MW titles (2015 and 2016) and three of the past 12 (also 2012).
