WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- One of only three teams to shoot under par in the final round of the NCAA West Lafayette Regional on Wednesday, the San Diego State men's golf team finished sixth out of 13 teams to end its season. The Aztecs carded a 3-under-par 285 on the par-72, 7,465-yard Kampen-Cosler Course, but fell 10 shots short of advancing to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 24-29, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
SDSU finished at 8-over for the tournament, 10 shots behind New Mexico (-2) for the final spot to Carlsbad. No. 35 San Diego State's 3-under round was only bettered by regional champion Vanderbilt (-8). Joining No. 2 Vanderbilt out of the NCAA West Lafayette Regional were tournament host and No. 30 Purdue (-11), defending NCAA champion and No. 15 Florida (-4), No. 11 Arizona (-3) and the Lobos (-2). The Aztecs moved up three spots on the final day, passing No. 37 Mississippi State (+9), No. 47 Indiana (+10) and Southern Illinois (+11).
Sophomore Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) and junior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) each logged top-20 finishes to pace SDSU. Kowack tied for 14th out of 78 golfers at 2-under 214 following a 1-under 71 on Wednesday. Starting on the 10th hole, Kowack was 2-over through his first 10 holes, before birdieing three in a four-hole stretch and finishing his round with consecutive pars. He had four birdies overall for his round with three bogeys.
Hastings, meanwhile, shot a blazing 4-under 68 when the final round score average was 74.00 to finish in a tie for 18th at -1. Hastings opened with par-5, 607-yard 10th hole with a bogey - his lone of the round - and followed with back-to-back pars, but then birdied four in a five-hole stretch to get to 3-under through eight holes. Six straight pars were followed by a birdie on the par-5, 598-yard sixth and then three more pars for a 68. Hastings moved up 19 places in his final round.
Sophomore Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 34th at +3 with his first under-par round of the tournament, carding a 2-under 70. Chokprajakchat went bogey free for his round, notching birdies on the par-4, 477-yard 12th and the par-4, 406-yard eighth. He advanced 18 places on the leaderboard on Wednesday.
Senior Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) tied for 60th at +13, while junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) tied for 69th at +19. Moss shot a 76 in today's final round, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 534-yard fourth. He also had two birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys. Lague had a 79 today with his lone birdie coming on the par-3, 185-yard second, which was followed by a triple bogey on the par-4, 482-yard third. He also had three bogeys and a double bogey.
Vanderbilt's William Moll captured medalist honors at -7, one shot clear of runner-ups Bastien Amat (-6) and Gordon Sargent (-6) of New Mexico and Vanderbilt, respectively.
