Aztecs Tied for Ninth at NCAA West Lafayette Regional

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The San Diego State men's golf team slipped a spot into a tie for ninth place after two rounds of the NCAA West Lafayette Regional. The Aztecs are at 11-over-par 587 following a 1-over 289 Tuesday on the par-72, 7,465-yard Kampen-Cosler Course.
 
SDSU, which is 35th in the latest Scoreboard ratings powered by Clippd, is tied with Southern Illinois at +11 for ninth in the 13-team field. No. 2 Vanderbilt leads the way through 36 holes at -16, while No. 30 Purdue (-15), No. 11 Arizona (-9), No. 23 New Mexico (-3) and No. 15 Florida (-2) round out the top 5. The top-five squads and lowest individual not on those teams from the West Lafayette Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, slated for May 24-29, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in nearby Carlsbad, California, hosted by Texas.
 
Sophomore Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is the top San Diego State player through two rounds and is in a tie for 13th out of 78 golfers at 1-under 143. Kowack fired a 3-under 69 on Tuesday. He bogeyed the par-4, 392-yard first hole and the par-4, 484-yard 18th, but in between had five consecutive birdies to close his front nine and 11 pars overall, moving up 15 spots for the day.
 
Junior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) is tied for 37th at +3 following an even-par 72 today. Hastings got to 2-under for the round with a birdie on the par-5, 608-yard 16th hole but double-bogeyed No. 18 to settle for a 72. He had four birdies overall, against two bogeys and the mentioned double bogey.
 
Sophomore Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is in solo 52nd at +5 after shooting a 2-over 72 in Tuesday's second round. Chokprajakchat was even-par through 15 holes with two birdies and two bogeys, but bogeyed both the 16th and the par-3, 206-yard 17th before regrouping to par No. 18 for his 74.
 
Senior Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) slipped 32 places into a tie for 60th after a 79 today and 9-over 153 through 36 holes. Moss sank two birdies in his round, but also had seven bogeys and a double bogey on the par-5, 607-yard 10th hole.  
 
Junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday and is tied for 67th at +12. Lague got to 1-under with a birdie on the par-4, 483-yard 11th, but double bogeyed both the par-3, 183-yard 13th and the 17th, before closing his round out with a birdie 3 on the 18th. He had four birdies overall on Tuesday with two bogeys and the two double bogeys.
 
Purdue's Ken Hsiao tops the field at -8 following a 65 on Tuesday. Vanderbilt teammates William Moll and Gordon Sargent are tied for second with Mississippi State's Garret Endicott, three shots back at 5-under.
 
SDSU finishes up its play at the NCAA West Lafayette Regional at 9:25 a.m. ET (6:25 a.m. PT), playing with Stetson and College of Charleston and teeing off from the 10th hole.
