Hastings Ties for Second at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- San Diego State men's golfer Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) fired a 4-under-par 66 in the final round of the 77th Western Intercollegiate to finish in a tie for second place at 3-under 207 Wednesday on the historic par-70, 6,486-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club. Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) joined Hastings in the top-5, tying for fourth out of 96 players at 2-under 208 as the Aztecs finished seventh out of 14 teams overall at 18-over 1,068.
 
Hastings got better each day, shooting a 71 on Monday, a 70 on Tuesday and a 66 in today's final round. Even-par through his front nine with two birdies and two bogeys, Hastings shot a blazing 31 on the back nine, logging four birdies and no bogeys. The 66 was tied for the lowest round of the day and the second-lowest round of the tournament as the final round averaged a 72.52 today. Hastings tied with Stanford's Michael Thorbjornsen for second, one shot behind medalist Filip Jakubcik of Arizona (-4).
 
Chokprajakchat, meanwhile, shot his second straight 1-under 69 and finished the tournament without an over-par round, going 70, 69 and 69. Chokprajakchat eagled the par-5, 532-yard fourth hole, and had three birdies and four bogeys in today's final round, none after the par-4, 458-yard 10th hole. Chokprajakchat tied with three others - Tommy Morrison (Texas), Sampson Zheng (California) and Karl Vilips (Stanford) for fourth, the best finish of his career.
 
SDSU, which is 34th in the latest NCAA computer rankings, dropped three places to seventh overall with a 5-over 355 in the six-count-five tournament, the only one San Diego State plays this season. No. 38 Stanford won the team title at +8, while No. 8 Washington (+13), No. 21 California (+14), No. 25 Oregon (+15), No. 9 Arizona (+16) and No. 17 Texas (+17) also bested the Aztecs.
 
Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) finished in a tie for 57th at 11-over 221 following a 73 today, while Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) and Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) were a shot back at +12 with a 73 and 74, respectively, in today's final round. Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas, Nev.) came in a tie for 72nd at +15 following an 80 today.
 
The back-to-back Mountain West champions will look for a third straight title when they compete in the Mountain West Championships, April 26-28, at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington.
