SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- The San Diego State men's golf team fired a 3-over-par 353 to move up five places into fourth on the second day of the 77th Western Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Through two rounds at the historic par-70, 6,486-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club, the Aztecs are at 13-over 713 in the six-count-five event.

The 3-over by SDSU, which entered the tournament 34th in the latest NCAA computer rankings, matched No. 17 Texas for the lowest round of the day. San Diego State's five counting scores, as opposed to the usual four counting scores for a five-count-four event, averaged 70.60 when the field's stroke average was 73.37.

At 13-over through 36 holes, the Aztecs now only trail No. 38 Stanford (+9), No. 9 Arizona (+11) and No. 8 Washington (+12), while No. 25 Oregon and No. 41 Brigham Young are tied for fifth at +15.

Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas, Nev.) is tied for 40th at +5 after shooting a 4-over 74 in the second round. Ngo's triple bogey on the par-4, 392-yard seventh had him at 4-over through seven holes, but he bounced back with two birdies and two bogeys over the final 11 holes for his 74.

This biggest mover on the day belonged to Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy). Kowack, San Diego State's No. 1 golfer this season, opened the Western Intercollegiate with an 11-over 81 on Monday, which had him in a tie for 91st. In today's second round, Kowack fired a 3-under 67, which was bettered by only four players. His 14-shot improvement moved him up 38 places into a tie for 53rd. Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) is tied with Kowack among others in 53rd after a 3-over 73 in today's second round. Lague was at 3-over through 14 holes, but double bogeyed the par-5, 565-yard 15th before ending the round on a good note with a birdie on the par-5, 491-yard 18th.
