COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – On Wednesday, the Mountain West Conference announced its weekly awards for tennis and San Diego State's Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice was named Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice wins the award for the first time in his career. He is the second Aztec to bring home the honor this season after Johannes Seeman garnered the accolade on March 27. While this is his first time winning Player of the Week, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice won conference Freshman of the Week honors twice last season, January 18 and April 19. He was the first player in program history to win that award and remains the lone Aztec to accomplish the feat since the team does not have any freshmen this season.
He won both his singles and both his doubles matches on the week as the team earned wins over Air Force and New Mexico. Against Air Force, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice (10-4) played on the fourth court against Alec Fritzinger and cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win. In doubles, he played with Johannes Seeman (6-1) on court No. 2 and soundly defeated Phillip Deaton and Kyle Garner 6-1. In SDSU's win over No. 66-ranked New Mexico, he played again on the fourth court and went up against Georgio Samaha. After dropping the first set in the tiebreaker 7-6 (7-3), Gonzalez Fitzmaurice stormed back to win the following sets 6-1, 6-3 to clinch an Aztec win. In doubles, he played with Seeman again against Samaha and Nicolas Recoura. The Aztecs came out on top in the tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4) to clinch the doubles point.
Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and San Diego State finish up the regular season next week. They have a road match at UNLV on Thursday, April 18 and return home to play Utah State on Saturday, April 20, at the Aztec Tennis Center. Prior to that match, the team will honor seniors Robin Parts, Andre Saleh, Chikaya Sato, Seeman and Bora Sengul.
