CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- The San Diego State men's golf team finished in seventh place out of 16 teams at the RE Lamkin Invitational Tuesday at historic San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista.
The Aztecs, who are 31st in the latest NCAA golf computer rankings, carded a 2-under 286 in Tuesday's final round to finish at 11-under for the tournament on the par-72, 7,033-yard course. Co-host San Diego won the team title at -22, four strokes ahead of Colorado (-18) and No. 48 Fresno State (-18). No. 13 Georgia Tech (-16), No. 19 New Mexico (-15) and No. 41 LMU (-15) also finished ahead of SDSU.
Skyler Ngo (Las Vegas) was San Diego State's top finisher for the first time of his career, tying for 12th out of 95 golfers at 5-under 211, thanks in part to a 4-under 68 in today's final round. The 68 was tied for the second-lowest round on Tuesday, 5.11 strokes better than the field average (73.11). Ngo had seven birdies in the round, including three over the final five holes. Starting the day in a tie for 32nd, Ngo went up 20 places into a four-way tie for 12th.
Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) finished a stroke back of Ngo in a tie for 16th at -4 following a 2-over 74 today. Chokprajakchat opened with four bogeys through the first 10 holes without a birdie, then birdied three in a five-hole stretch late before bogeying the par-4, 460-yard 18th.
Competing as an individual, Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) was the third Aztec finisher, tying for 23rd at 2-under 214 with an even-par 72 today. Starting on the par-4, 438-yard 10th hole, Towsend got to 2-under for his round with his third birdie on the par-4, 397-yard 15th, but it was his last of the round. He had a streak of seven straight pars stopped with a bogey on the par-4, 401-yard fifth and ended his round with a bogey on the par-4, 427-yard ninth.
Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) joined Towsend with an even-par 72 on Tuesday and finished at even-par 216 for the tournament. Lague's up-and-round consisted of six birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-3, 202-yard 13th.
Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) also shot a 72 and tied for 47th overall at +2. Moss had two birdies and two bogeys for the day.
Three other Aztecs competing as individuals were Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak HS) (T-52nd, +3), Rugthai Thongsom (Surat Thani, Thailand) (T-79th, +10) and Liam Koeneke (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) (94th, +33).
Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS), who was disqualified for the tournament after signing an incorrect scorecard following yesterday's second round, shot a 2-over 74 today, bogeying three through his first 10 holes before recording his lone birdie on the par-3, 158-yard 11th.
USD's Craig Ronne captured medalist honors at -12 with LMU's Mason Snyder (-10) and Riley Lewis (-8), and Fresno State's Matthew Sutherland (-8) also in the mix.
Next up for the Aztecs will be The Goodwin, March 28-30, at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
