SAN FRANCISCO – The San Diego State men's golf team sits in a tie for 20th place out of 31 teams on the first day of The Goodwin Thursday at TPC Harding Park. The Aztecs combined for a 13-over-par 293 on the difficult par-70, 7,193-yard trek.
SDSU, which is 29th in the latest NCAA golf rankings, is in a four-way tie with No. 48 Long Beach State, Colorado and San Diego, but just eight shots behind the top 10. No. 7 Tennessee, No. 22 Georgia and host/No. 44 Stanford are the only teams under par on a day when the average score was 73.22 (+3.22). No. 43 Brigham Young is fourth at even-par, while Pepperdine (+1) round out the top 5.
Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) leads San Diego State in a tie for 28th out of 168 golfers at 1-over-par 71. Moss had three birdies and four bogeys on the day.
Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for 68th at +3. Chokprajakchat bounced back from a 4-over start through 10 holes with a birdie on the par-4, 405-yard 15th and seven pars.
Rounding out the scoring for the Aztecs were Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) in a tie for 92nd (+4) and junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) in a tie for 115th (+5), while Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) carded a 7-over 77.
Clemson's Jonathan Nielsen blitzed the first-round field for a 4-under 66. Three others are a shot back, including Leo Metzger (UC Davis), Karl Vilips (Stanford) and Mahanth Chirravuri (Pepperdine).
SDSU begins its second round at 7:05 a.m. PT Friday.
