SAN DIEGO – No. 24 ranked San Diego State softball was shut out, 3-0, by No. 3 Stanford in the season opener on Thursday night. The Aztec offense only recorded one hit against the reigning National Freshman of the Year, NiJaree Canady.

It was a pitchers' duel at the SDSU Softball Stadium as the Cardinal and Aztec lineups combined for just four hits through the first five innings of the night.

Allie Light was tremendous in her first outing of the year. The reigning Mountain West pitcher of the year tossed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out five.

Macey Keester notched the lone Aztec hit of the night in her first at-bat with a sharp single to center field in the third inning. That plus a Micaela Macario walk were the only two SDSU batters to reach base.

The Cardinal broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth on an RBI single and two-run home run for a late 3-0 lead. The three runs were more than enough for Canaday, who tossed all seven innings allowing just the two baserunners while striking out 15.

San Diego State will look to bounce back on day two of the SDSU Season Kickoff where they take on the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. First pitch from SDSU Softball Stadium is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
