ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The San Diego State women's basketball team (18-11, 9-7) lost at New Mexico (20-9, 11-5) 66-63 Wednesday evening.
The contest had a postseason feeling and was as tightly- contested as possible. Neither team led by more than six throughout the game and there were 20 lead changes and 14 ties. Both teams shot 37% from the field, 14% from three, had exactly 38 rebounds and 19 points off turnovers.
The difference in the game ended up being free throws. Even though the Aztecs had just two more fouls than the Lobos, New Mexico shot 34 free throws while the Aztecs shot just 12.
Kim Villalobos (12), Abby Prohaska (11) and Jada Lewis (11) all scored in double-digits and Adryana Quezada had a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Lobos held a five-point lead midway through the third quarter, but the Aztecs battled back to grab a four-point lead with 5:20 left.
New Mexico responded with a 5-0 run to retake the lead. The Lobos never trailed again although the Aztecs had chances until the final second.
SDSU was down three points with five seconds left, but New Mexico turned the ball over on an inbounds pass and Abby Prohaska's half court heave rimmed out at the buzzer.
The Lobos were led by 39 combined points from Nyah Wilson and Aniyah Augmon.

The Lobos attempted 34 free throws while the Aztecs attempted just 12.
THE NOTE
The last eight meetings with the Lobos have been decided by single digits.
