Aztecs Tied for Third at Southern Highlands Collegiate

LAS VEGAS – The San Diego State men's golf team fired a 6-under-par 282 and is tied for third after the first day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Sunday on the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club.
 
The Aztecs, who are 35th in the latest NCAA computer rankings, only trail No. 23 Florida (-10) and No. 17 Illinois (-8), and are tied with No. 30 Texas A&M (-6) and Pepperdine (-6). Behind SDSU is No. 1 North Carolina (-5), No. 15 Oklahoma (-4), No. 21 Texas (-4), No. 16 New Mexico (-2), No. 2 Auburn (-1), No. 4 Arizona State (-1), No. 34 Missouri (+2), No. 50 UNLV (+3), TCU (+4) and No. 29 Georgia (+9).
 
The counting four golfers for San Diego State each are under par with juniors Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) and Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) tied for 15th at 2-under 70, while sophomores Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) and Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) are tied for 24th at -1.
 
Hastings logged six birdies with four bogeys in his 70, while Lague sank four birdies with two bogeys. Chokprajakchat notched four birdies against three bogeys, and Kowack eagled the par-5 ninth hole, had three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey.
 
Junior Jack Townsend (San Diego/Charter School of San Diego) is in 75th following a 9-over 81.
 
Missouri's Jack Lundin leads the 75-man field at -6, while Florida's Ian Gilligan, Illinois' Tyler Goeke and Arizona State's Josele Ballester are a shot back at -5.
 
Monday's second round starts at 9 a.m. PT.
