SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men's tennis team played twice at the Aztec Tennis Center on Wednesday afternoon with the same result. The Aztecs won 4-0 in a clean sweep of UC Riverside and Point Loma Nazarene.
The Scarlet and Black improve to 5-1 including a 5-0 record on The Mesa and drop the Highlanders to 1-10 and the Sea Lions to 1-2.
"I was happy to see our guys maintain the energy and level of play all the way through today's doubleheader," said Head Coach Gene Carswell after a long day. "We'll keep building from here. I like the confidence the team is carrying into our upcoming matches against the Northern California schools."
San Diego State began by playing UC Riverside at 2 p.m.
In doubles, SDSU rolled out its regular lineup. Chikaya Sato and Johannes Seeman coasted to a 6-1 victory on the second court over Ryan Huynh and Aarav Sane. Alexander Mandma and Robin Parts won 6-3 on the top court against Joshua Roth and Justin Lamy to clinch the doubles point for the Aztecs. On the third court, Eugenio Gonzalez Fitzmaurice and Bora Sengul led Lucas Ibarrondo Suarez and Lucas Mszyca 4-3 when SDSU clinched the doubles point.
In singles, on the third court, Sato faced Ibarrondo Suarez and cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Playing on court No. 4, Gonzalez Fitzmaurice matched up with Hugo DeGrande. He won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Saleh battled Huynh on the bottom court and won the first set with ease 6-1 but had to expend more energy to close out his opponent in a 6-4 second set victory to win the match for San Diego State.
Three matches went unfinished with SDSU securing an early victory. On the top court, Seeman led Roth 6-3, 6-5. On court five, Parts was up 6-2, 3-6, 3-0 on Sane. Sengul trailed Lamy 7-5, 1-2 on court No. 2 when SDSU won.
The Aztecs followed it up with the match against Point Loma Nazarene at 5 p.m.
In doubles, Sato and Seeman once again faced little resistance on the second court, this time shutting out David Strassburger and Elijah Weeks 6-0. In the second match of the day, Liam Spiers replaced Gonzalez Fitzmaurice as Sengul's partner on the third court. The Aztec pair won a close match 7-5 over Andrew Suver and Lukas Schuster. Mandma and Parts faced Alexander Leischner and Nabeel Khan on the top court. Their match was even at six when the Aztecs won the doubles point.
Seeman competed on court No. 2 against Suver. He was consistent in a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Playing on court No. 4, Parts matched up with Khan. It took him only one more game than his teammate to achieve a victory, 6-3, 6-4.
On the third court, Sato played similarly well against Strassburger. He won 6-4, 6-3.
Another three matches did not finish due to San Diego State winning so quickly. Mandma led Matt Melosch 6-4, 3-2 on the fifth court at the time of victory. On court No. 6, Spiers won his first set against Schuster 6-3. Their second set was 3-3 when SDSU won. Sengul played on the top court for the first time and trailed Leschner 7-5, 2-3.
San Diego State will head to the Bay Area this weekend to play a pair of West Coast Conference schools in San Francisco at noon on Saturday and Saint Mary's at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
