LIHUE, Hawaii -- Junior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) fired a 7-under-par 65 and is in solo second after the first day of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Thursday.
Hastings had six birdies and an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole, and just one bogey in the first of three rounds. His 65 was only bettered by Arizona's Yannick Malik, who carded an 8-under 64. Five others are within two shots of Hastings in the 122-man field.
Sophomore Tyler Kowack (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) is the only other Aztec under par and is tied for 22nd at 2-under 70. Kowack, who has three straight top-10 finishes, sank five birdies with three bogeys in his opening round.
Sophomore Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for 62nd at +1, while junior Shea Lague (Jamul, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) is tied for 70th (+2) and senior Jackson Moss (San Diego/Point Loma HS) is tied for 89th at +3.
As a team, SDSU is tied for sixth at 6-under 282, just three shots behind Utah (-9) for the top 5. Long Beach State is in first place at -15, while Arizona, Grand Canyon and Washington State are tied for second at -10.
Round two is set for 8:30 a.m. HT (10:30 a.m. PT).
