SDSU Softball Set for USD on Wednesday Night

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State softball team travels across town to take on San Diego on Wednesday night. First pitch for the single game starts at 5 p.m. PT at USD Softball Complex.
 
The Aztecs (2-2) are just outside the top 25 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, which was released Tuesday. SDSU picked up 67 points in the poll, just four points behind 25th-ranked Auburn (71). San Diego State also has the 29th most points (25) in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll, 55 behind No. 25 Texas A&M.
 
The Aztecs went 2-2 last weekend at the San Diego State Kickoff, opening with close losses to No. 3/3 Stanford (3-0) and Minnesota (5-3), before finishing with victories over No. 25/rv Kentucky (2-1) and UC Santa Barbara (6-1).
 
Macey Keester tops SDSU in hitting through four games with a .455 average (min. 5 at-bats), while adding two RBIs and a run. Micaela (Lala) Macario is batting .364 with a team-high-tying three runs and an RBI, while Mac Barbara (.333) paces the team in home runs (1), RBIs (5) and slugging percentage (.667). Katie Goldberg is also hitting .333 to go along with two RBIs and a run.
 
Allie Light leads a pitching staff that posted a 1.75 ERA in 28 innings last weekend, striking out 25 with three walks allowed. On the season, Light is 1-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA in 12 1/3 innings, striking out nine with two walks allowed, while holding the opposition to a .191 average. The right-hander has pitched the ninth-most innings in the country this year without yielding an earned run and the fourth most without giving up any runs. Dee Dee Hernandez (1-1, 2.62 ERA, 8.0 IP, 10 K, 0 BB) and Cece Cellura (0-0, 2.80 ERA, 5.0 IP, 3 K, 0 BB) have also logged enough innings (5.0) to qualify for the team leaders.
 
The Toreros are off to a 0-5 start, but three of those losses came against top-10 opponents Texas (twice) and UCLA. Tele Jennings leads the team with a .231 average, while Emma Glaime paces the pitching staff with a 0-1 record and 5.00 ERA in seven innings.
 
SDSU leads the all-time series with USD, 58-7, but did fall, 4-0, in the last meeting at home last season (March 3).
 
Following the short trip to USD's campus, San Diego State plays host to the 33rd annual Campbell/Cartier Classic this weekend. On the docket for the Aztecs are rv/No. 25 Texas A&M (3 p.m. PT) and LMU (5:30 p.m. PT) on Friday, rv/No. 25 Texas A&M (3 p.m. PT) and No. 17/14 Oregon (5:30 p.m. PT on Saturday, and LMU again at 12:30 p.m. PT Sunday.
